Activities: Endangered Species

Do you remember how Uncle Bill tested the Incredible Counting Machine by asking how many Caspian Tigers there were? The answer, sadly, was zero. He went on to list many other mammals (with some amazing names, like the Pig-Footed Bandicoot) that have become extinct in recent years. That means there are none left anywhere and we will never be able to see them again.

Activity 1 – Gone for Good – Top Trumps

If you would like to know more about the animals that Uncle Bill listed in the book, here is your chance. Below are 10 mammals that are now extinct. You can read about them, and if you like, cut out the cards and play Top Trumps with a friend! (If you want to print it out, I suggest you download the file below and print on white card).

Activity 2 – Extinction Rebellion

As if that wasn’t bad enough, there are thousands of animal species in the world today that are in danger of becoming extinct.

There are lots of things that threaten animals: hunting for meat, poaching for skins or tusks, loss of habitat for farming or development, global warming, even floods and bush fires. We all have a part to play in safeguarding their future: some of the things we eat come from places where land is cleared for farming, or from seas that are over-fished. And we all know we have to do our bit to reverse global warming.

Put yourself in the shoes of a threatened species in the game below. Chose one of the four endangered animals and see if you can help them make it to the end of the century without being wiped out by all the dangers.

Activity 3 – Endangered Animal

Can you find an endangered animal and write down some facts about it? What are the things that are putting it in danger of extinction? Draw a picture, and if you like, you can send it to me at the email address on About and I’ll put it on the website!
