7 Minute Video – Painting an Illustration

I have been busy working on illustrations for Caleb and the All-Seeing Glasses the past few weeks and am enjoying the process very much.

Would you like to see an illustration being painted? If so, click on the video below. It’s a sneak preview of one of the illustrations from the second part of the book, which hasn’t been released yet!

I make the comment at one point about keeping your brush moving fast, but I don’t mean as fast as in the video – as it has been sped up 6 times faster than reality!

During the video you’ll hear me mention some of the colours I use from my paint box, such as Payne’s Grey and Yellow Ochre. If you would like to know what they look like, check out the guide below. I have drawn a box around the ones I used for this illustration.

Much of the time I use the colours straight from the pallet as that keeps them fresh and bright. You can also put two different washes over the top of each other to mix them “optically” (by eye), which still keeps the paint “pure”. Here are a couple of examples of when I did mix the colours before using them:

Watch out though, if you mix too many colours it can just turn to a muddy mess and you lose all the brightness… Another thing to keep in mind is that you can only get away with two washes of colour, possibly three, before the paper starts to break up and the paint starts to look muddy.
